This month seems HOT in and outside Siam Pinoy Grin: the political situation in LoS; business courtesy issues at SP; the Thai Culture training course; OBAMA-McCain presidential elections; the battle of insurgents vs. government troops in the Philippines....etc. etc. etc.

I guess we might as well talk about the things we learned from these recent 'turbulence':

Here is mine:

CHARACTER ASSASSINATION -  Character assassination is an intentional attempt to influence the portrayal or reputation of a particular person, whether living or a historical personage, in such a way as to cause others to develop an extremely negative, unethical or unappealing perception of him or her. By its nature, it involves deliberate exaggeration or manipulation of facts to present an untrue picture of the targeted person. For living individuals, this can cause the target to be rejected by his or her community, family, or members of his or her living or work environment. Such acts are typically very difficult to reverse or rectify, therefore the process is likened to a literal assassination of a human life. The damage sustained can be life-long and more, or for historical personages, last for many centuries after their death.

In practice, character assassination usually consists of the use of double speak, spreading of rumors, innuendo and deliberate misinformation on topics relating to one's morals, integrity, and reputation.

In politics, perhaps the most common form of character assassination is the spread of allegations that a candidate is a liar. In political circles the term "career assassination" is being increasingly used in place of character assassination. Other common themes may include allegations that the candidate is a bad or unpopular member of his family, has a bad relationship with his spouse or children, is disrespected by his former co-workers, or routinely engages in disturbing, socially unacceptable behavior, such as sexual deviancy. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_assassination)

......how about you? What term ( something that can enlighten and educate us) that caught your excitement or attention?

Personal Attack aka Ad Hominem Abusive.

A personal attack is committed when a person substitutes abusive remarks for evidence when attacking another person's claim or claims. This line of "reasoning" is fallacious because the attack is directed at the person making the claim and not the claim itself. The truth value of a claim is independent of the person making the claim. After all, no matter how repugnant an individual might be, he or she can still make true claims.

Not all ad Hominems are fallacious. In some cases, an individual's characteristics can have a bearing on the question of the veracity of her claims. For example, if someone is shown to be a pathological liar, then what he says can be considered to be unreliable. However, such attacks are weak, since even pathological liars might speak the truth on occasion.

In general, it is best to focus one's attention on the content of the claim and not on who made the claim. It is the content that determines the truth of the claim and not the characteristics of the person making the claim.

character assassination (n.) simply means a vicious personal verbal attack, especially one intended to destroy or damage a public figure's reputation.

A PHRASE that pop out just lately:

BE PROFESSIONAL - It means the ability of a person to maintain his/her sense of professionalism in dealing with situations related to his/her job responsibility.

and being professional shows the kind of person you are in world of foruming:

Netiquette:

Short for network etiquette; refers to using basic good manners in your electronic communications. It's advisable to never write anything you would feel uncomfortable repeating in person.

Just like some forumers who just come in to do what do they do best is called an act of....Trolling.

trolling:
The act of deliberately posting false or inflammatory information in a network newsgroup to elicit responses from other serious readers.

eto po, may nasulat po ako tungkol sa trolls a few months back:

http://www.siampinoy.com/forum2/index.php/topic,808.0.html

Sometimes people use the phrase "be/ing professional" to mean that the person in question should behave in a cool, jai yen yen way. Yun bang smooth at kung pupwede walang emotion or pinapakitang galit o anumang negative attitude toward the people s/he deals with. Siguro ikinukumpara ito sa mga naging sinaunang mga land owners or slave drivers or "boss" na diktadura, malupit, pala mura at walang sense of fairness sa trabaho. IOW, ginagamit ito ng marami to substitute for a sensible person, and not his/her profession per se.

The "plus and minus karma" can be  INTERPRETED to a lot of things.  Unlike "character assassination" where "hate" "jealousy" and "fear" are explicitly stated to achieve one goal: to destroy!
