For many weeks, I've been printing off the internet hundreds of pages of resources, 'been reading book after book on my two units for my values classes on "Goal Setting", but nothing seems to click into place. My lessons had been (I'm sure) mundane for students, frustrating for me...

Last night, I resolved to find a solution to the problem today, and so during my two hours of prep time, I sat down in front of the computer and asked myself, what will be the best thing to use to teach students how to set goals? Then, inspiration struck! Who else would be an authority in goal setting than the man who defies gravity in the basketball court, who was cut from the varsity team when he was in sophomore year in HS, only to use that failure to launch a remarkable career in basketball? Michael Jordan, of course!

And so I enthusiastically googled "How does Michael Jordan teach goal setting?" And voila, first two on the search list were websites that specifically uses Jordan's story to teach goal setting! 'Must have been my lucky day! The English level was just right, it came with two fabulous worksheets on the story and a goals sheet, which students have to put into action in one week. Exactly what I needed, so Alleluia!

I had a great time teaching the lesson, students were engaged, and they were going to do something authentic for their homework. Well, it took weeks to hatch...but it was worth the wait. Sometimes, we have ideas we let boil in our heads for some time, but the ingredients just never seem right. We just have to hold on to that idea, when we believe in it so much... its time will eventually come. And when it does, there's so much satisfaction in fulfilling it. And when it does happen, you're ready to begin the next better, even bigger idea...

Good morning Pinoy teachers in Thailand! May today be a great day as you plant new seeds in the minds of your children. Ah yes, indeed our students are our children... and it is important we ask ourselves everyday, "If these children were mine, how much patience, how much understanding, how much love will I give them today so I can help them prepare for their future?"

Teach well!   Philippines
