Academia gender equality between the US and the Philippines

One may think that the US has no gender discrimination issues in the academe, but studies and research show otherwise.  In fact, there are even advice for women given for these situations.  But are these milder compared to the discrimination that we have here in the country?  Somehow, it does make the effort of going to post-grad school, such as looking at a sample admission essay and an example of personal statement for the application process a bit useless, doesn't it?  Is there a way to gauge and compare the situation here and in the US?  And what can be done about the situation?
