It’s been 5 years now since I arrived here in Thailand. After I rested for a day, I was lucky to be offered a position as a part time teacher at one of the language center here in Thailand. On my fourth day, I received a call from one of the oldest bilingual schools here in Thailand. To cut a long story short I took the job. Why have I used the words ‘’I took’’? Because I didn’t apply for teaching but my sister did it for me without my knowledge. I wasn’t knew the system here during my first 3 months, but the days passed by. I eventually became aware of the racism here. Five years of continuous teaching made me well versed in the field of teaching. I have been talking to my Thai co-teachers and they keep telling me about the European teachers. Most of the Thai people tend to call them ‘’native speakers’’ due to the color of their skin, eyes and hair. European teachers are enjoying a VIP treatment from Thai administrations. They have higher salaries compare to Asian teachers mostly Filipinos. These things are not enough reason to discourage the hardworking Filipinos who often times exploited by their employers. Thai teachers noticed that Filipino teachers always come to school earlier than other nationalities, complete uniform, clean shaven, polite and always ready to teach whenever the Thai administrations wish them to teach the students. My Thai coordinator told me that she always saw the Filipino teachers armed with teaching materials or visual aids and that the Thai classroom teacher doesn’t need to worry about the students while they are in the hands of a Filipino teacher and they can continue their work without having to be worried that students might not listen or do something else aside from the subject. They said that Filipinos are so motherly and fatherly to the students to the extent that sometimes the students treat them as their own parents or family. On the other hand, European teachers are better than Filipino teachers when it comes to English pronunciation. (No offence this is just my observation) It shows clearly those Thai teachers who always with a Filipino and European teachers know the difference between these two. It’s very obvious that there are advantages and disadvantages learning with these two groups of teachers. By these, the parents will eventually open their mind to at least lessen the racism in the school.

I agree with Maldita. Not all Europeans are good English speakers, most of them have terrible accent as well. And they're bad in spelling.

That's true! We are better than them in many aspects. I forgot to mention that we are also better in spelling than most Europeans. I've seen a lot of times they misspelled the word like; separate most of them spell it seperate, liquor liquaor. I was a classroom teacher in grade 6. I had difficulties to convince my students that time. They always or most of the time believe in their European teachers than their Filipino teachers when it comes to grammar and pronunciation. My students had 6 foreign teachers that time. When the foreign teachers begun to write something on the board I also begun to have a headache. They misspelled the word many times during the period, and when they left I begun to correct them by telling to my students the correct spelling. But my students don't believe me if I didn't show any dictionary to them. Days passed by, they begun to realize that we Filipinos are better than European and even native speakers when it comes to spelling and teaching strategy. Eventually I won their hearts and trust.

Sorry typo err lng po. my nakapagsabi skin na all foreigners ksma na pinoy don na required na raw magkaroon ng batchelor degree bago makapagturo at magkaroon ng license. I saw the letter from the ministry of Ed. It's true. So my predictions are: Less Europeans will come to teach here in Thailand in two years time, more Filipinos, Singaporean and Indians will come and make some bargaining here. The effect of this in the Philippines is very obvious. We will suffer a shortages of qualified teachers in our country because of this.

hahahahahhahaha to the Ministry of Education! That policy has been implemented here in Thailand long time ago but there are sad facts behind that policy. I do hope that time will come that they will open their eyes to the reality and not just settle down to what they believe as good and beautiful. It is a fact that Thai people like Caucassians so much and the parents(not all) are so desperate to see their children learning with a teacher with white skin and blonde hair. What is the end point there? Thai schools are twisting the policy and they are making it legal. Do you know about the Caucassians working here in Thailand as volunteer teachers but are highly paid? They signed a contract as a volunteer teacher for them to get a work permit but the reality is they are paid and they do not voluntarily teach. Letters will remain letters for the Ministry of Education. I have read policies regarding the teaching of ESL in Thailand and hiring foreign teachers but I observed that only few are followed although it has been implemented. hahahahahaha MOE! LOOK AT THE PROSTITUTION IN THAILAND? IT IS TECHNICALLY ILLEGAL BUT HMMMMMM... That's a humble opinion from a KRU FILIPIN...

May mga Europeans at mga Pinoy na magagaling. At meron din namang pera din lang ang habol. As in lazy to work and learn new things for their students.

I have a co Filipino teacher he speak English fluently and his accent is superb. Many foreign teachers thought his been educated in America. He does the morning speech everyday because of his accent. He’s a good friend of mine and down to Earth person. I’m so proud that he lifts up the Filipinos in our school. It shows that we don't need native speakers of English to speak English fluently.

I just hope that some Filipinos will improve their pronunciation, so our training will have results. A language teacher is expected to model producing the sounds correctly to be understood.

if i were a student... if i were to learn english with an attitude(+), i would prefer to learn from a capable and wise Filipino teacher coz they teach with soul and with character and they are fun to be with. if i were to learn english with a foreign accent, then i would watch and listen to CNN european version. BBC is boring. watching english movies you learn too. just avoid the violent ones. listening and reading and singing english is also a great tool for learning. buy english books and magazines. read! the internet, chating...discovery channel, national geographic, the history channel. of the spoken word, what else can you get from some english native-speaker that you can't get from cartoon network? do what you have to do. it is your choice. you know best. fish yo! justmythoughts.

Re: Filipino and European teachers Who do you prefer?
surely our pride filipino who have a desire to teach...
slight OT: I'm just curious how the chinese gov't negotiated the Thai gov't to send their teacher here with good benefits. less than a thousand teachers in a year spreading in all angle of thailand whether public or private institution. thought that maybe thai govt want their people knows how to speak chinese. so what they can get with filipinos? the chinese teacher got their Thai working salary every month and also a whole year salary from chinese gov't upon the completion of the contract. when they come home, they are very happy. I'm talking to my chinese co teacher with the same salary as me but live like the European people as she has another salary from their gov't.
I think its an ovious for us (filipino) as what we hear and read in any websites that we are the most English Speaking Country in Asia even some are claiming India due to the fact of population but in percentage I think we are...
so why we dont use this advantages? How our gov't can support the filipino teacher in thailand?

recently, many people and countries are integrating Chinese language (particularly mandarin) as part of their education... many predict that China's economy would equal, if not surpass, that of the west...therefore the need to communicate in Chinese as well as English is an investment for the future.....maybe that's what the thai gov't is doing and the chinese gov't also made a good investment... and talking about the Philippines being 'the most English Speaking Country in Asia'...there was a survey early 2008 (forgot the site) about the English proficiency of countries who use english as their second language...guess what....from being number 3 a couple of years ago...now we're down at number 4... 1. south africa (no doubt) 2. singapore 3. malaysia 4. philippines there goes our competition with the European teachers...what happened?...are we getting too confident?...or is it because all the great filipino teachers are out of the country...hmmmmm

I agree with this...
and talking about the Philippines being 'the most English Speaking Country in Asia'...there was a survey early 2008 (forgot the site) about the English proficiency of countries who use english as their second language...guess what....from being number 3 a couple of years ago...now we're down at number 4...
1. south africa (no doubt) south Africa? Is it a part of Asia? maybe you should check again the site you're refering too... 2. singapore 3. malaysia 4. philippines
there goes our competition with the European teachers...what happened?...are we getting too confident?...or is it because all the great filipino teachers are out of the country...hmmmmm
forgive me to my shortage mind at first i thought your one of the other nationalities but upon reading this last message of yours. therefore I convince that you're filipino as your refering as " we " and "our" in the sentences. So if that survey is reliable that would be our challenge to go ahead...
