Parang teleserye yan Ms. RB.

I am just confused why some people really give a fuss about accent when its one way to determine a persons origin. In all countries that i have been through mapa europe , north america or other asian countries pa yun,  they easily recognize me as a Filipino because of my accent and i am proud of it. And mind you i always hear praises from them due to the uniqueness of my accent and how well we Filipinos speak english. I am an engineering graduate mind you at alam nyo naman na kaming mga engineers dont give much concern in our grammar or the way we speak english eh what more pag narinig pa nilang magsalita ang english teachers na ka tulad nyo diba. So please dont give too much concern about the accent or wether we have to improve our accent. Its one of the best traits we have in terms of speaking the english language. Sorry po if i have wrong grammar or wrong construction of sentence. Just my thought. Cheesy

nice one ging, standard english, standard accent and clear pronunciation, yan naman ang kailangan... kakaiba nga tayong mga pinoys kasi we use specific words for specific things pinagaralan natin paaano gamitin ang wikang banyaga bago natin gamitin, napuna ko lang sa ating mga pinoy , dala rin natin ang ating regional accent, yung april nagiging epril, yong milk nagiging melk, yung ham nagiging hum, i think we should be aware of ourselves, di naman siguro masama to correct ourselves, bago pa man punahain ng iba... regular and constant practice.... i myself need it too.

But this is not a reason for not improving on our language skills.

Tama ka. Maraming ibat-ibang accent. Aussie, Singaporean, Mid-western US, German.

Boat in Distress:   Mayday, mayday... We are sinking, We are sinking...

German Coast Guard:  This is the Jearman Cooast Guaard...  How can we help you.

Boat in Destress:  We are SINKING, We are SINKING, over...

German Coast Guard:   What - are you Sinking about?

Actually, it is not only us Pinoys that are struggling with pronounciation issues. What we need is to tweek our pronunciation a bit so that we are better understood by most of our listeners. We do not have to speak like Veronica Pedrosa (former CNN and BBC announcer) who has a very crisp British accent. We would love to have that kind of accent but can only dream about it.

We could make up for our Pinoy accent by having something to say.

Steve Hawkins (who has muscular dystrophy) cannot speak without a voice synthesizer that produces a very metallic voice. When he speaks, however, everybody listens - because he often has something very important to say.

Actually, Pinoys that have had opportunity to travel and live abroad have more opportunity to improve on their language skills. We learn that phrases like "For a While" when we mean "Just a moment" just doesn't cut it.

We learn that we have an affinity for phrases like "As in".  Citizens Band (CB) radio uses also like to say "Roger on That" but is pronounced like "Rodjer Ondat" - sound like a Name. That will be my next handle... heh heh..

We like to refer to the Toilet as the CR. Nobody in Thailand understands what CR means but for us Pinoys it is such a commonly used term we forget that other people might not be familiar with it. We feel like asking for directions to the nearest Toilet feels like an impending disaster is about to occur so we euphemise by asking for the Comfort Room or CR.

What is important is not how we say things or pronounce words. First and foremost is having something to say. Content ika nga.

I do not strive to speak like an American. Unfortunately after years of exposure to Hollywood movies, Ghetto English, CNN, I have picked up a lot of Americanism.

I wish I had listened to BBC more so that when I am asked about what a big wheeled vehicle - I would refer to it as a LORRY.

For me, there is NOTHING wrong with the Filipino accent, but with pronunciation, yes, there are problems.

I'm an English language teacher, and in the world of foreign languages, accents don't matter. There are many kinds of English - Indian, Singaporean, American, Australian, British, Filipino. They all sound different, yet they are all English.

What's important is, that you are understood, because the main purpose of language learning is communication, not aesthetics.

For pinoys, we do need to get better at pronouncing words, learning idioms, slangs, coz they will make us better communicators.

But one thing we don't have to strive for, is to sound like an American, a Brit or an Aussie... because we aren't from those countries.

'Just my thoughts...

Ha ha!!! Pinoys that try to imitate the American Accent are often ridiculed and branded as Over Acting or Trying Too Hard!

You are right in that at School, our English teachers taught us how to speak, read and write in English. Pronunciation was secondary. Most of the English langauge movies were produced in Hollywood. Many Disk Jockeys in radio stations around Metro Manila spoke in English. Some of them had passable English Langauge skills.

Many of our Catholic Priests were American. A few were French Canadian which explained their atrocious English. These priests often learned to speak the local language and were better understood by church attendees.

That's true about those people who think negative to those who have or trying to speak with an American accent.... SOmetimes, I cannot blame them because most of the English teachers in the Philippines don't have the accent, and they don't try to learn it...

Pinoypoy, there is a thread about crab mentality.  Maybe you can share inputs there...

For me, if you are an English teacher, start brushing up because it will be hard in the coming days getting your Thai teacher's license.  I believe that it will be another factor unfavorable for us.  Because Thais will look at it as another retail come-on.  I am just thinking in advance and preparing as well.

Try speaking English with the so-called Filipino accent and other kababayans will laugh at you.
Try speaking with flawless Western accent and you will be branded as cono, maarte, mayabang, feelingero / feelingera.

What's the best way to deal with these narrow-minded and insecure kababayans?

Inggit lang sila...

What is more important is to speak clearly. Furthermore, you must have something to say. The way you present your idea is also very important.

If they do this to you - Ignore them. Inggit lang sila.

Try speaking English with the so-called Filipino accent and other kababayans will laugh at you.

Di ako may sabi nito ha.

Tsaka tama yung isa. Masyadong i-snob ang pinoy sa kapwa pinoy. Di ko alam kung kinakahiya nila ang ibang pinoy or what.
