a troll, accdng to internet slang, is a person that "posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional responseor to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion"

trolls in scandinavian folklore are "ugly, obnoxious creatures bent on mischief and wickedness".

traditionally most online boards and forums get rid of trolls for a time or forever. what does this board/forum do with trolls? what's the best way to 1) identify and 2) get rid of trolls?

A forumer (with the exception of mods Grin) should be considered a troll when he gains at least 50 -karmas. Grin Grin Grin Pero pag pumalo ito sa 66, e, dapat na siyang tawaging “megatroll.”  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Once a forumer gets this distinctive identity, SP mods, in the interests of productive discussion, should exercise discretion to delete a megatroll’s post until his buffoonery lands him in the doghouse.

Thou oftentimes a source of unnecessary annoyance, our existing troll (or soon-to-be-megatroll Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy) has been a source of fun, laughter and bewilderment (to me, at least). Ika nga ni Erick, he adds colors in the forum.

Happy songkran!!! Grin

I agree with Erick and C-Pinoy whole heartedly! Trolls are a source of fun for me in the other forums I participate in. The replies that require mental gymnastics and abandonment of reason are really really hilarious! I mean, it's classic, I've saved them to hand down to posterity. Heck, one of the most hilarious replies I've read is in my signature in every post! It just reeks of idiocy because I teach IT and not English.  Cheesy

However....harassment and sexist replies?

When trolls get personal, and hit below the belt, and harass other posters in other threads, then I should think it's time to say goodbye to them.

caveat: not all trolls are evil. it's possible some trolls are newbies to online forums or, as in some cases I've encountered outside of this forum, have some sort of, er...how shall I put this delicately?....mental problems. i'm not joking. there's this online BB i've participated in since, oh I don't know the 19th century maybe, where one poster kept offering his "revelations". he would tell us that god told him this or that. it creeped me out at first, coz i was so naive about posting then. i mean, "what if" god was really talking to him and telling him when the world will end and what we should do? cast your bet on the safe side, i always say. but when he started typing gibberish, like saying fake latin words, then i started entertaining myself. i didn't reply, the other posters in the forum were just plain mean to this individual.

some forums invite an international audience. god help you if you couldn't spell or type sensible sentences. to all badly spelled posts, or disagreed in some off tangent way, some forumers would scream: "troll"! and would get reported back to the webmaster. I was out of there real fast.

sorry, i digressed. the simple answer to the original question above is to ignore any trolls once they post. chances are, it's been posted in the wrong thread, or the individual has misunderstood the thought, question, or discussion. one clue as to whether this is a drive-by troll post is if there is SHOUTING, insults, or swearing involved. report the post to the individual/s in charge and let them do the clean up.

rule of thumb: do not feed the trolls

BP, tama ka. But whether you feed them or you feed them not, trolls will always find ways to feed their callous heads and wreck havoc on an otherwise productive exchanges.

My one satang suggestion: SP mods should proactively rein in incessantly overbearing trolls.

A blessed week to everyone! Grin Grin Grin

it's a form of maladaptive behaviour, so just ignore it.
