A long time ago
You and I had yet to find
That one another''s hearts could fit
Inside one another''s minds
And learn more than just a thing or two
About what you and I felt
About the real me and you.< Times were simpler then
And so were you and I
And all the dreams we shared
We shared with hearts wide open
And a limitless horizon painted
With souls that used to cry
But, with each other there,
Then somehow learned to smile
A little bit more than a little while.

What mattered most in those heady days
Was that someone somewhere else
In so many little ways
Was willing to find the time to care
And learn to lose a precious bit of self
To build a bit of something more
No matter what the consequence.

I''m happy it was you
And happy it was me you learned
To love so sacredly and true
And hold, in moments neither heaven
Nor its angels can understand,
The essence of a lonely me
Unwilling to move until you held my hand
And took me beyond what worlds I knew.

If I had it to do again
Would I feel the pain that parting brought
And wave goodbye to my truest lady
And my dearest friend?
Or would I keep my love a little longer new
A little less used, a little less blue
In a world a little less beautiful
Without the memory of a little bit of you?

I would rather brave a lonely lifetime first
Than spend my days inside
A world filled with empty people
But without you to sit beside.
And the little things
Between you and me
Are the things I remember most
When I close my eyes and dream of days
Not lost, nor forgotten yet,
But still within the soul I know
Will always be beside your own
Dreaming still of simple ways
To celebrate the day we met.
