7th SEABA Champions It was no less than a clean sweep by the Pilipinas Team in the last South East Asian Basketball Association games held at Rachaburi a week ago. The Pilipinas Team played against Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and finally, Thailand. The team averaged about 35 points in lead against all the other teams to give our country a much-awaited victory after a long absence from basketball games throughout the region.
In Coach Chot Reyes’ words, “We came here to get a ticket to Japan.” And that’s what the team did exactly, and more. “I’m happy. We have accomplished our goal, but now we have to focus on the bigger goal”, Coach Reyes says.
As a result of their latest victory here in Thailand, on July 28 to August 5, 2007, our kababayans in Japan will have the chance to watch Team Pilipinas play basketball against equally strong teams like Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Japan, China, Iran, and Korea, among others. To say that it’s not going to be a walk in the park for the Pilipinas Team is an apt statement, for according to Coach Reyes, they have to be at their best to win this one.
As far as chemistry and playing as a team is concerned, Coach has this to say, “The team has really gained a lot in terms of chemistry and bonding. Now the team has to get to a higher level.”
But beyond the wins, and beyond the great plays, at the end of the day, there’s always the fans to think of. Coach Reyes is thankful for the fans who came during the 4 consecutive nights that Team Pilipinas played. “Wow, yeah! It’s really heart warming. Nakakataba po ng puso to see our fellow kababayans drive as far as 4 or 6 hours away just to watch us. You know, at the end of the day, that is why we do what we do – to bring a lot of joy to Filipinos, not only back home, but in other lands.”
Hopefully, our kababayans there in Japan are now gearing up to show an even more strong support to our basketball team when they come to play against other strong teams in Asia. Meanwhile, the fans in Thailand will have Team Pilipinas’ recent victory to savor for a long while. For many, the hours of travel to get to Rachaburi to watch the games, and even the absence from work for some, has all been worth it.Recommend this article... |
